Ipad Aps:
On the Ipad there are some great and very inexpensive Montessori apps that I love, they are just like the materials in our classrooms. -Nancy D.

Indoor Activities:

  • Music:
    • Play some music and dance with your kids
    • Dance to new or different music (many new and exciting types of music can be found on the internet)
      • tunes from the past
      • something new to them
    • Dance with them
    • Dance on bubble wrap…it’s a blast
    • Create a Dance Contest and give healthy snacks for prizes
    • Start your own band…play along with a CD or make up your own music
  • Dress Up:
    • Kids love your old jewelry box, any old shoes, old clothes and Halloween Costumes
    • Create a trunk, a box or a special place in your closet that contains dress up items
    • Create your own play or act out a nursery rhyme or story while dressed up
    • Create your own costumes with aluminum foil, cardboard, paper, bath towels etc
  • Indoor Camping:
    • Make tents in the house in new places- cover a table with a blanket where they can play
    • Fill backpacks with toys, games and anything else that your children would take on a Camping Adventure
  • Work is Play:
    • Mailman: Save your old junk mail, use a small book bag and let your kids deliver the mail around the house (make mailboxes out of shoe boxes etc)
    • Office: Kids love to create with paper clips, scrap paper, folders, pens and pencils…dress for the office with a tie etc.
    • Other professionals that are easy to duplicate with household items: Office, Doctor, Nurse, Construction Worker, Policeman, Fireman, Baker and Teacher
  • Craft Corner:
    • Save your old greeting cards:

      • Play mailman, let the kids deliver the mail
      • Cut up old cards and play matching games
      • Make puzzles with old Christmas cards
    • Make Greeting Cards out of scraps of material, paper, buttons, ribbon etc.
      • Make Valentines, Birthday Cards, Anniversary Cards, Have a Great Day Cards etc. then save them for special ocassions
    • Create artwork with paper clips, stickers, paper lunch bags, pencils, pens, markers, etc.
    • Make your own play dough (recipe in the DCM cookbook)
      • Use kitchen utensils to create shapes and textures (garlic press makes great hair and cookie cutters are perfect to get things started)
    • Coffee Filter Art
      • Color with markers
      • Cut out snowflakes and color with crayons or paint
      • Tye-dye coffee filters by dipping them into bowls filled with water and food coloring
    • Paint Sun Catchers
    • Make Salt Dough – sculpt into shapes – bake – cool – paint – display
    • Melt crayon pieces and place in old candy molds to create new shapes

Snacktime:

Use snack preparation and consumption as a time to “Cool Down” and take a break between activities. We are always looking for healthy kid friendly snacks to share with our DCM families, so please contribute your recipes and ideas via our email. decoloresgreenville@yahoo.com.

Ritz or Round Crackers
Peanut Butter
Banana
Cinnamon
Sliced Almonds

Instructions:
1. Smear each cracker with enough peanutbutter to make the banana stick
2. Slice the banana into disc shapes and place on the peanut butter
3. Add almond slices to the banana and peanut butter
4. Sprinkle with Cinnamon

Variations:
-Use other nut butters (Almond, Cashew etc)
-Drizzle with honey before adding Cinnamon
-Substitute Cinnamon with Nutmeg or Cocoa Powder
-Add Apple slices instead of banana or get crazy and do both…

Hippie Dip

(2) 6oz. containers of Plain or Vanilla Yogurt
Fruit: Bananas and Apples
Graham Crackers or Graham Sticks
2 tsp. Honey
1 tsp. Cinnamon
1 tsp. Vanilla

Instructions:
1. Place yogurt in a bowl
2. Add Honey, Cinnamon and Vanilla then stir
3. Serve as a dip for fruit, crackers and graham crackers or smear on the crackers and add fruit or granola on top

Variations:
-Use Candy flavoring oils to add a new spin instead of Vanilla
-Use Maple Syrup instead of Honey
-Substitute Cinnamon with Nutmeg or Cocoa Powder

Outdoor Activities:

  • Snow Play

    • Take a small spray bottle with colored water outside and make rainbow snow
    • Sledding, snow angels, snow hiking, going for a walk in the snow and shoveling (believe it or not…kids love to shovel)
    • Skating
    • Make a snow jump and or a snow fort (use plastic shoe boxes to create snow “bricks”)
    • Snow man (dress him up with old hats, gloves, scarves etc.)
    • Look for animal prints
    • Stomp in the snow
    • Slide in the snow
